Laptop with modem.    Cellphone with dialup modem adaptor (usually 
cheap for name brand phones).   Internet account with nationwide node 
dialup access or an online service like AOL etc.    Mail handling 
software on the laptop.    A Verizon account or something similar 
with nationwide cell coverage.   A roster of dialup numbers along 
your anticipated route.

No matter where you are, you could logon and download e-mail or use 
webmail, read/post VV messages.
