This works. It is perfect. It never fails. Hasn't failed in 40 years, new belt or old, of any type, for a dozen of the most knowledgeable owners I know.
  Tighten the nut on the idler pulley's stud only slightly tighter than finger tight. This keeps it from slipping when you do everything else.
  Pry back on the idler pulley with any kind of lever. Tighten the belt ONLY enough to still allow you to pull the alternator/generator fan through with the index finger of your weaker hand. Then lock everything down.
  If the belt is damaged, change it.
