Actually, the Chevy II was the name of the series.
The car, introduced for the 62 model year, was
avilable in at least 2 model lines, the Chevy II 100
which was the base model, and the Chevy II Nova 400
which was the deluxe model. There is some
documentation of a middle range Chevy II 300 series as
well.

The trend in those days was to pop for the deluxe
model, since it was only a few bucks more than the
base, and it offered more style and comfort. I can't
find actual production figures, but I was a pretty
much into cars as a kid when the car was introduced,
and I remember seeing far more Novas than 100s or
300s.

Other interesting Nova trivia:

The hardtop was cancelled at the beginning of the 1964
model year (fall '63) as was the Z03 Super Sport
package, but both were re-introduced mid-year as a
response to customer complaints. The convertible was
also cancelled this year but it was not revived, ever.

The Canadian alternative to the Chevy II, the Acadian,
was built in the US starting with the 1968 model year.
It was identical to the US Chevy II Nova except for
badging.

V8s were not factory installed in Chevy IIs until the
1964 model year, the L32 and L77 283 cubic inch V8 was
offered. However, many enthusiasts put V8s into the
early cars as aftermarket mods.

The last Chevy II 100 was the 1967. Starting with the
68s, all we called Novas.

>The Chevy-II Nova SS was available in 1963. The
Chevy-II started in
>late '61, titled as a '62 of course but I'm pretty
sure it was NOT
>badged as a Nova. That came in '63 with an options
package I think,
>as did the SS package.
