There are only 5 immobilizers approved by the Insurance Bureau of Canada
which has a very good standard for these units, quite a bit better than the
USA standard and similar to the European ones.

Heres the standards info-

Some of the basics of a good immobilizer is it shuts down the fuel with a
solenoid, as well as killing the starter and activates passiviely-without
the driver arming it. A typical flaw in many systems is things like
colour-coded wiring, IBC approved systems have all BLACK wiring without
labels, doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure out what the 'red' wire
probably is connected to as example.

Immobilizers are quite effective, and are not alarms, they just defeat most
car theft attempts, and do not require any after sale costs like monitoring
or subscriptions etc.

Any of the units on that IBC list should be excellent units, typical costs
are ~$250-350 installed.

For cheap protection, just putting a tap to turn off the tunnel pan fuel
line, and taking the coil wire with you works ok;-)
