<VV> Need help with a 63

I need some help from all you EM guru's
   
  I just picked up an original 63 coupe  4 speed car.  It has issues obviously but all around a pretty nice car.  It has however,  what appears to be an original  gas heater and a manual choke.
   
  I know very little about earlies, but I thought gas heaters went out in 61 along with manual chokes.
   Any help here, thanks
