Actually there is a vent on the top of every Corvair carburetor.  It's  
protected from outside air and contaminants by the air filters but I've  seen sand, 
dirt, small stones and insects get through.  These contaminants  can get 
sucked into the main jet and restrict fuel flow to the point that side  of the 
engine quits running.  I don't know the answer except to open the  carbs 
occasionally and clean them out.  The gaskets and fuel  flow needle valve need to be 
changed anyway.
