    But you have to compare that seemingly low  price with the salaries of 
THAT time.  My first job with a  new engineering degree in 1957 earned me less 
than $6000 a year.   So you can imagine what assembly line workers were getting 
at the  time.  That $3000+ was probably most of their yearly salary.
    You can't compare prices with different time  frames.
