<VV> Re: [fastvair] Thermocouple adventure

I use the area under the spark plug (and place the thermocouple in "A"
touching the head) for a couple of reasons.

One, that's where it's designed to go. Two, it gives a nice clean
measurement... just don't try to compare with readings from stock gauges
(or GM specs) or those with senders in other locations. There is no
problem with mounting the sender in alternate locations, mainly a matter
of preference and what you're actually trying to measure.

IMO, what you're really trying to do is establish a baseline for
"normal" and be able to figure out when you're outside of that range.
Having two head temps helps that even further.

That also means that as long as the junctions for the thermocouples are
in the same place, they should be "off" by the same amount. No real need
for correction. I simply looped both ends and "hung" above the
differential (trying to keep them out of contact with the hot diff). I
figured that would be the most consistent place to put them.

For the "patch" cable I ran standard 12 gauge wire (likely overkill)
with a simple twisted and taped connection (though solder would have
been better). My application was not in a Corvair chassis, but in
running similar wiring in a Corvair I've most usually chosen to run
alongside the factory harness in the tunnel then come up inside the car
alongside the clutch/accel linkage.

So far I'm been very satisfied with my decisions. The readings have been
in a very consistent range (from winter use to running in a 113 degrees
ambient) meaning that the 70 degree "control spec" for the cold junction
might be important for an exact reading, but pretty unimportant for
practical use. I've also verified my readings with an infrared
thermometer and have been impressed with how closely they tracked...

Good luck!
Bill
