<VV> Late Wheel Bearings

My son and I are replacing the rear wheel bearings on his 66 Corsa. We've replaced the bearings, races and seals then pulled the manual out to see how we need to set the play. Does anyone know the best way to set the play without the special tool that is described in the manual?
