Yep, and another good trick, sometimes even practiced at home, would
be to put one end of a large diameter rope in a barrel of oil and let the
other end hang over the edge and down into a clean container then let
the oil wick itself down the rope ... clean as new. Even though it did not
have detergent additives, oil that came out of a worn engine was
contaminated with 'blow-by' and got plenty black and dirty. I was working
at a Studebaker dealer when one of the other mechanics was working on
an early DeSoto ... He pulled off the pan to find it solid with sludge. There
were grooves 'machined' in the sludge by the crank shaft throws :-)

Commercially reclaimed oil came to gas stations in 55 gallon drums
... sometimes with additives ... and was quite a good product.

Also, a common practice for a station
was to simply take their drain oil, run it through a barrel of sand to
"filter" it, let any sand that was picked up in the process settle to
the bottom, and then decant the "filtered" oil into those glass bottles.
