guys:
be aware that I am working alongside an 82 year old seasoned certified corvair nut and this powerglide cable hiccup problem even has him stumped a little bit. We know enough to know that its a cable installation issue, and believe we can alleviate the issue by attempting some of the tips as they were suggested here.
Smitty, I realize what you say, that taking the pan off seems to be an extreme to solving this particular issue, but with this being an open forum and opinions can vary, you have to sort out suggestions  on your own will. As I watch and read what others say here, it becomes apparent to me who has the "right stuff" and who may have the "sometimes right" and "sometimes-not-so-right" approach. It all washes itself out at the end of the day.
Matt, you do have a point with the comment about "60's language in a 60's mechanic mentality". I'll be honest, at 35 years old, I did start with my pedal bicycle, graduated to a lawnmower and now corvairs, lol. I must say that after FOLLOWING THE BOOK for the first time and trying to fix a problem and reading a sentence like, "connect the TV swivel road on the so and so." can kind of throw you off a little if you are not concentrating. What the heck is a TV swivel and why is it on the transmission pan, I don't want to watch TV now! lol that would be my inital response in my head, and over a few minutes of studying the theoritical it come to light how the stuff should work in a practical sense and you find your way eventually.

Smitty Says: What is this nonsense of removing the pan and/or extending the
ball end by putting the selector in low. There is a perfectly good method
of installing the cable, in the shop manual, that works. Makes me think some
of you are trying to be smarter than the mechanical device you are working
on. That ain't gonna happen.
