I had exactly the same problem on my 70 Mustang way back in the 80's. It was
a bad key switch. I tested it with a jumper from the battery to the coil as
you did. Put a test light from ground to the coil and crank it. See if you
have a light when the key is in "Start" and "run". You should in both
positions. If not, I'll betcha you've got a bad key switch.
