Right ! TurboGlide (a terrific transmission that they shared with Buick
(?) had "Grade Retard" - I had forgotten the term !

I mentioned that because we were talking PGs and I wanted to distinguish
it from the 2-speed (2-slow and 2-fast) PG.

I remember using GR to about 4 grand and then popping it into "D" for a
nice burn.

Then I needed an new trans, and I ended up with a PG anyway.  Learned
that learn the hard way !

I realize this isn't Corvair, but this is how bad information gets
spread.
The turboglide had a GR selection on the quadrant instead of LOW. It
stood 
for grade retard; it was NOT a low gear, and couldn't (shouldn't) be
used 
for accelleration. It was strictly a braking function.
