Thanks to everyone who provided tips on the problems on the '66 Corsa yesterday. As an update, here's what was wrong and the solutions:
- brakes locked on what was supposed to be a rebuilt system: seems the mechanic forgot to change the front (original) brake hoses. The left one was plugged. When I saw the the brake line fittings were rounded, it was apparent that he gave up too easily and hoped for the best. (Vise grips to the rescue, again)
- full-time back up lights: Put a second washer on the new sending unit
- rough idle, lack of power, and backfiring on de-acceleration, even with rebuilt carbs: owner had changed the plugs and set them at the recommended points gap instead of the recommended plug gap :-). (last thing I checked since they were new :-(.
