The agency I work for is owned by a bank so I will tell you how many of such scams work: the checks look very real and scammers use real company checks as a model making them take longer to be returned than a check that is simply drawn on a non-existant account. When returned the bank takes the money out of your account, hence, your loss. Banks do not have a responsibility when the check is not issued by thier depositor.
