Thanks for all the input, with the help of a local Corvair enthusiast, we
(and by we I mean he) fixed all three major issues with no additional parts.

   1. The battery drain was on the starter cable and as one mentioned it was
the heater cable. We have a temporary solution with some foam rubber but
the long term solution will need new ducting and replacing the long nut with
a shorter one, and I may look for some rubber/plastic cover for the bolts.
   2. The generator not charging was due to corroded contacts in the voltage
regulator. A little fine sandpaper clean those contacts up and she is a
charging. - Although I noticed on the freeway the gen/fan light came on
dimly once, not sure if that is indicating anything, or if it is normal.
   3. The Backfiring and poor idle was mostly due to a failed vacuum plug.
Easy fix and he adjusted the idle and timing a bit.

So I was very happy for simple no cost fixes, and the introduction to a
helpful mechanic and the owner of the beautiful shop.

In addition while it was on the lift, he adjusted the clutch, tightened some
bolts on the oil pan, and tranny cover plate, filled the differential oil,
and made a list of future projects for improvements.

All in All a great day, and I am looking forward to our first weekend trip
in this beautiful convertible.

Thanks again, maybe I will see some of you at a car show one day. I will be
there with my wife and a nice red 62 convertible.
