In most cases it's meant as humor.  Of course, how well it comes  
across has a number of variables, but in general that's the case.  If  
it's not seen that way - regardless of intent - the best course of  
action is to take it off the list.

I'll offer one other thought - if something *is* really meant as  
humor, then someone who takes it seriously ought to get a reply along  
the lines of "just messing with you, didn't mean to make you mad", not  
"there's something wrong with you because you don't think it's  
funny."  If you've made a comment and someone takes it personally in a  
bad way, blaming them is *not* going to help.
