-- isn't the thing tapered on the outside end, so that you can get it 
started in the hole?  if it's .500, what is holding it in?  I'm not 
talking any out just to measure them!

Nobody has mentioned "knurling" as a third alternative -- generally the 
technique is used when the guides are not "replaceable", but it can be 
done on a Corvair.  Intake valve stem seals are pretty much required 
when the valve stems are vertical, but with horizontal stems, like on 
the Corvair and others, the seals are generally considered optional by 
most of the folks that I know.
