<VV> Electric car heaters? Little Corvair

I think the subject of using an electric heater in a Corvair has come
up here before. I suppose the answer is that it would take too much
electricity to be practical. I've always thought that an electric
heater would be really great, not only for a Corvair, but for water-
pumpers, until the water is hot enough in the cooling system to
provide heat. You could have an electric grid, just like a portable
electric heater or an electric furnace and simply blow air through it
and have instant heat!

So, if it takes too much electricity, then what kind of heater does an
electric car have?

What about a Prius? Do they start the gasoline engine, just to heat
the water, just to provide heat?

What about the Volt? Anyone know what they plan to do?

What about an all-electric car? What would they do?

If they're using some sort of electric heater, it would seem to really
drain the battery fast.
