 Although pretty much all modern turbos have water cooled bearing housing, it's not a requirement that it be used. Just make sure you let the thing cool briefly before turning off the engine. 

Water cooling was introduced to minimize warranty issues from owners who were shutting these things off after a hard run and not changing oil like they should. Coking was the issue this solved. 



The rest is certainly something to deal with...

I believe that there are two other items to consider (beside size).  First 

is cooling. Several newer units depend on engine coolant - usually  water - 

to assist in keeping the turbo within a certain heat range. Water is a  rare 

commodity in most Corvair engine compartments. Air pump vs. Air/Fuel pump.  

The Corvair is a draw through system, most newer turbos are designed for 

use  with EFI systems and fuel never passes through the compressor. Just keep 

these  in mind. 

 

Others will probably offer better specific suggestions.
