 2)perhaps I should  sidestep the  General's Rube Goldberg washer mechanism, and  upgrade to modern, small  electric motor/pump assembly?

Smitty says;  Mike I have done three conversions to modern electric pump and am happy with all.  Down side, is that there is a little engineering problem to keep from losing prime when drawing fluid from the top of the reservoir.  I finally got tired of fighting that and punched a hole in the back side bottom of the reservoir.  Then too is the problem of wanting stock apearing.  A little ingenuity is needed to pull that off but I have a friend competing in pure stock that has pulled that off through several classification events.  I would vote for making the change.
