On FCs, no need to take the front crossmember off--at least it's not on my
'64. It's right there on the left hand front frame rail, somewhat near the
brake master cylinder.

I just looked at the hidden VIN on a '61 - it's not a plate, it's a  
partial VIN (plant and sequence number only) stamped directly on the  
left side frame rail.  You need to take the front crossmember off to  
see it.  I believe on lates it's stamped on the right side.
