That is a tapered/stepped socket that is specially made to do just this. It 
 is, indeed, available at almost any parts store. You might still have to 
loosen  up the two big bolts that attach the alternator, and probably remove 
the other  bracket. This allows you to tilt the alternator away from the 
switch for access.  The "sender socket" is a standard resident of all Corvair 
mechanic's tool boxes.  It works on other cars as well. It is designed to 
grip the switch tightly, but  not distort the stamped outer shell. Distorting 
the shell leads quickly to  leakage/seepage. Go ahead and buy the socket. You 
don't have to have a "Snap-On  quality" tool here, you won't be using it 
that often (I hope).
