Mark,

I think that a worn valve guide would make itself known at virtually any 
RPM.  It would (likely) sound like a "lifty ticker", but a bit louder - more 
constant and more irritating.  IMHO the problem is elsewhere.  But, the oil 
consumption you indicated could lead one to thinking along the lines of a 
valve guide problem, so I do not stand behind this comment 100%.
