bear in mind the cross shaft is nothing but fairly thin steel tubing , so  
if it gets bent (leaned on ? etc ) it may even kink or slightly flatten out  
where it goes thru the supports. so think if you have eliminated other 
problem  areas , it is worth the time to remove it , look it over carefully , 
straighten  and clean it up , or replace it. i put the bushing kits on mine 
offered by  corvair vendors after doing this.
then you will need to synchronize again...no biggie. it is worth the time  
to go thru all the linkage and free it up.
turbo's also need similar maintenance, plus making sure the arm is tight on 
 throttle shaft etc.
