Tim, did the bushing kit too on the Fitch. A LOT of work to get the cheeep tubing round enough to be free in the bushings. When done, it was perfect till I hooked up the return spring, then it wouldnt quite go back to idle (like 950 rpm). That is when I gave the shaft a good pull to the rear and the thing now drops down to 800 RPM which is where I want it.

bear in mind the cross shaft is nothing but fairly thin steel tubing , so
if it gets bent (leaned on ? etc ) it may even kink or slightly flatten out
where it goes thru the supports. so think if you have eliminated other
problem  areas , it is worth the time to remove it , look it over carefully ,
straighten  and clean it up , or replace it. i put the bushing kits on mine
offered by  corvair vendors after doing this.
then you will need to synchronize again...no biggie. it is worth the time
to go thru all the linkage and free it up.
turbo's also need similar maintenance, plus making sure the arm is tight on
throttle shaft etc.
