The rubber can last as long as it likes based on whatever heat is  applied. 
The fittings make removal and re-installation  a snap, and provide  a 
positive seal. It is also one less thing to worry about. Steel might be  cheaper 
than Brass, but even plated ones tend to pick-up some rust eventually.
