<VV> shock absorber mystery

I just installed a new set of front shocks on my 63 Spyder, and upon  
removing each old shock, I was surprised to find a large dent knocked in each  
one down low on the body of the shock.  The old shocks were on the car  when I 
bought it, and seem to be exactly the same dimensions as the new ones I  
got.  Is it possible in a heavy bottom out, for the lower control arms to
