I picked up a used 71 Vega for $100.00 in the late 70's. It broke the timing
belt and the pistons hit the head. I bought a 72 with the larger 1.9? engine
that had a brand new block and cracked head for $50.00. I got a new head for
free from a customers car that never got paid for. I also picked up a 73 GT
with no motor & rotten body for free at the same time. I altered the head
gasket for the 1.9 head, swapped the GT interior and standard trans into the
71. I drove my 71 72 73 Vega for many more miles, including a trip from CT
to DC with a newborn for the 4th of July smoke in! I had an uncle who worked
in a shop that did plating so my Vega had a chrome valve cover, thermostat
housing, alternator & master cylinder cover! Sold it for $100.00 when we
needed a bigger car years later.
