you fail to take into account the need to remove the old lube before 
refilling with a modern lube with a possibly indefinite lifespan.

taking the units out to drill and tap the original drain bosses would be 
extra work -- just dump the old fluid and insert new, leaving the bosses 
alone.  Any number of modern transmissions not only don't have drain 
plugs, they also don't have fill plugs, figuring the seals are good for 
the functional life of the unit, and if something fails the unit will be 
out of the car for refilling.
