All early windshield with trim, i.e Monzas, the trim is installed in the 
gasket BEFORE installing the assembly in the car. One must also remove 
the assembly from the car and then remove the trim from the gasket. The 
trim will suffer if done in reverse order.

Yes, the rope method works great.

But Hank's original question was does anybody have experience with the 
500 series gasket Clark's sells that does not use trim.

My only experience is with reusing the OEM gasket, I have not purchased 
a new 500 gasket.
