Right, Heathkit was the biggie but there were also Knight-kits from  
Allied Radio and test instrument kits from Eico. I've got many of them  
in my garage, most still working. The oldest working piece is about 60  
now, an Eico tube tester.

Ebay has gazillions of Heathkits of all flavors, generally selling for  
at least 10x the original kit price.
