<VV> 1967 Corvair Monza fuel pump ~Can rod be changed to make a 61 pump fit 67 ?

I think it can, but why? the 61 pump shaft is longer that the LM pumps. I 
suppose in a pinch the shaft could be cut down, (shortened), but I wonder if the 
end of the rods were hardened to prevent excessive wear?
