POSSIBLE out of time latch wheel. try holding the button in while turning  
the gear wheel of the latch to see if it clicks back in place. it has to be 
free  to move  a tooth or more in both directions to work.
if it moves too freely it probably has the broken spring. 
anyhow it would still  be a good idea to clean it out and relube it  with 
modern lubes. also lube the handle pushbutton where it comes thru the  
retainer. they had lubriplate on them originally which hardens up with  age.
