I'm with Harry on this -- one of the problems is there are so few cars 
that haven't already had the doors off, or ones you will never remove 
the hinges on due to corrosion, to check out.  As I recall "the stuff", 
it is more like a thin gasket, black & asphaltic, and may not be on all 
years of cars. 

So, I went and looked at some old early doors in "the stash" -- to me, 
it looks like they were painted with something akin to undercoating 
before assembly, as most are blackish, but there is no discernible 
remnants of a "gasket" or "dum dum".
