The wire from the "switch" stud was bent in such a way as to touch the edge
of the disc, and a corresponding mark on the disc from where it was
shorting.

This is the wire that feeds power into the coil to actuate it... when you
turn the key it applies power, when you release the key it is supposed to
cut the power and let the solenoid reset, pulling the disc away from the
contacts. The disc (which is hot with 12V when acutated) was touching this
wire... thus continuing to feed 12v into the coil once the contact is made
even when you release the key... the power feeding through the disc is
keeping the coil hot, which holds the disc in place, which keeps the coil
hot, which holds the disc in place... you get the idea =P

Or... for a clearer and more direct reply, once the solenoid actuated it was
touching all four contacts, not three as you pointed out it should.
