All of the "towed/shipped backward" theories seem not to explain the
damage to the lock pin on the lid.

I can't see a wind speed sufficient to do that, hence someone/somethng
pried/ripped the lid open, breaking the pin.

"it was that way when you brought it here" is the mantra of all
repairmen of all ilk.

I had a windshield replaced, with all those screws and caps around the
edge on a non-Corvair, and I made a point that they were all there, and
that "they should be there when I pick it up." 

Well, when I picked it up, of course half of them were missing, and he
said, without skipping a beat, "It was that way when you ... " and then
remembered our conversation and went to look for the parts, which he
found under the car.

Sort of reminds me of the scorpion and frog : "It what we do" rings a
bell here, so, you need proof that it was NOT "that way when you brought
it here." 

Wind just doesn't seem to be the cause of the damage IMHO, so wht did ?
