in most cases , you must hit the top retainer on each valve (trying not to  
damage the tip of the valve!) before attempting to use the compressor. i 
spray  all with blaster , then hit them all kinda sideways , then put the 
compressor to  them. i drill a block of wood to hold the valves in the order 
they came out of  the head. mark the block, then a punch mark on the head at 
the first one.   if any burrs on the end of the valve , clean it off with a 
file , or rotary sand  wheel  ( i have used a dremel disk on worn ends ) , 
before attempting to  pull the valve out of the guide. be sure to check for 
guide wear...
this is just a quick overview of how i do it.
