<VV> Old timer timing

When I was taught how to do a tune up back in the early seventies I was told
to remove the springs and weights, clean and lube them before replacing the
points. I never worked at a dealership as a tech and got very little factory
training. It became a habit and I continued doing it even in HEI
distributors. One time had another mechanic ask what I was doing, when I
showed him he was shocked and replied "I have never done that!" I had a tube
of GM distributor cam lube in my tool box that lasted for about 25 years and
that was what I used. I lubed the weights, the springs and the plate on top
of the distributor shaft. Never had a problem with sticking mechanical
advance. I found the HEI distributor weights got very rusty a lot quicker
than the points ones did.
