<VV> Hmmm.. Cup Holder VS seat belts

Seems to me that the owner manual for Corvair cars tells you to use the half of the seat belt that is behind the OTHER front seat when buckling up. I believe (don't know for certain) that the reason for this is to reduce the forces on the belt (and your body?) in the event of a collision. Doing it "by the book" has the belts crossed over one another when there is a front passenger. So, how are you going to have a console between the seats without compromising safety?

In the '60s virtually no one used the seat belts. Today, virtually all of us do use them and shoulder belts as well. Since the Corvair belts (virtually all) are merely lap belts, do you really want to compromise them by misusing them?

There is a pretty nice aftermarket center console made for Jeeps that will fit between the seats in some lates if not all. The only car I'm certain had one also had 67 up seats which might make more room. I suspect it'll fit in any late with buckets and it does have a cupholder =)

Something like this, I didn't check the measurements and there are a number of similar ones available. I'm pretty sure I've seen one with black vinyl type finish which matches a black Corvair interior very nicely.
