The journey continues ...

As I suspected, the gas tank is dry with a layer of silt and rust scale on the bottom ... unfortunately, it also has a couple of quick patches on the bottom. It must go. The master cylinder has failed so a rebuild is in order. I will do the wheel cylinders as well. I have new brake shoes but the ones on the car must have been changed shortly before the car went into storage so I am not sure if I will change them. The tires are miss-matches from the junkyard used just to get the car home. I will be fitting a set of 15" chrome wheels but I have not yet decided on the tire sizes.

There is what we used to call a 'monkey bar' on the front axle. As I recall company named 'Ieco' [sp.?] offered something they called a front stabilizer that bolted to the middle of the sub assembly in such a manner that the ends fitted into the lower control arms. Obviously it is not a stabilizer / sway bar but rather a transverse mounted double quarter elliptic leaf spring. Depending on its load free position it could provide positive or negative lift or be neutral. In any case it will modify the roll rate at the front and create a noticeable understeer condition ... perhaps it could make the Corvair handle as well as a Falcon :-)

Not withstanding a few bumps and dings, the more I work on this car the better it looks. The underside looks like it was only used on dirt roads. There is a sandy layer about 1/4 inch thick everywhere. I have been scraping it off to find the factory black still in tact. The front valance is rust free and the factory body color overspray is present on the outside of the front edge of the trunk.

I am trying to attach a couple of picture files but, for reasons unknown to me, they appear directly as pictures and not attached files. Perhaps Dennis or someone can make this work ... at least tell me how to make the attachment.
