 I think it causes more problems than it solves. Pack them once with the best synthetic grease you can find, and you'll never have to do them again.

I am in the category of have done many grease fittings in late rear 
hubs. So far no problem, but many have had problems with over greasing.

Now, whether I have extended the life of the bearings, or just wasted my 
time will never be known, as most live a long time even without greasing 
them!
