Go to <autos.yahoo.com/news/car-of-the-year-flops-.html?page=1>, to put in
your 2-cents' worth !

Nader was NOT the demise of the Corvair, and in fact, GM was phasing out the
Corvair for the cheaper-to-build (higher profit) Camaro.
GM continued making the Corvair for about 3 more years to make their point
that Ralph was wrong.

Anyone who has driven a Corvair knows that, and knows that the Corvair's
biggest "flaw" was that it was too far ahead of its time, with fully
independent suspension, and so many other "firsts" to mention here, but here
are a few :

The Corvair was the first to have a "sporty" small car, before which all
small cars were utilitarian econo-boxes.

Corvair had the first small convertible, the first American van, and is what
made Ford come out with the Mustang to compete with the Corvair's success!

The main reason for the Corvair's "failure" was that it was a sporty car
that actually handled, but American drivers didn't know how to deal with a
car that actually went where you pointed it !

Did you know the center of gravity was lower than any other American car,
except (maybe) the Corvette, which is why it handled so well ?

Add that to the American "need for speed" (i.e. "big-block, 400 cubic inch
engines) and were satisfied with going fast, if only in a straight line, and
didn't care if they could not take a corner without falling over!

I cancelled my new Mustang after driving my friend's 1965 Corsa, and have
owned mostly Corvairs since then.

Go to www.corvair.org to see why !

Charlie

CNNMoney.com has published a list of "Car of the Year Flops" and guess what
made the list?!

Discussing the Corvair and the Vega in the same paragraph, they turned their
attention first to our ride saying:

<These are but two of General Motors' most spectacular failures to develop a
competitive small car. Ralph Nader dubbed the Corvair "the one-car accident"
because its swing axle suspension had a tendency to tuck under, causing the
driver to lose control. >

I'll defer to those of you more accomplished in doing so to flame them. Go
get 'em, boys!
