Did you put washers on the bolts that hold the bell housing to the engine?
That's big no-no. Don't ask me how I know.

Subject: <VV> Clutch Noise

I'm looking for a sanity check.

I am getting what seems to be a hitting noise from my clutch/throw-out
baring.

I have followed the adjustment directions in the service manual to make sure
the clutch linkage is properly adjusted.

When the clutch is depressed I get a hitting noise (like the sound from a
regular V-8 when the lower bell-housing cover hits against the teeth on the
flywheel. When the clutch is released the noise goes away.

My Corvair is a 62 Monza Coupe with a replacement 64 engine and a 4-speed.

My questions to the group are:

#1 Where can I check (without pulling then engine) to see if I have an '62
transmission or a '64, as I understand the clutch/flywheel is different
between the two

#2 Does my short description of the noise point towards the throw-out
bearing or the multi-part flywheel or even the pressure plate?

#3 I will order parts from Clark's (my past experience with them has been
excellent), so would it be best to get the Basic Plus kit or the Delux kit?

Thanks.

Ed
