<VV> 62 wheel cylinder question

Ben and I were just out in the garage working on removing the rear wheel
cylinders and we had some trouble. The nut with the spring gizmo on it was
pretty frozen in place and it took considerable effort to remove it. Once
it was removed the wheel cylinder still wouldn't come off. I checked the
61 shop manual and the 62 supplement and saw that the wheel cylinder was
supposed to just come off after removing that nut so we took to hammering
and chiseling at it assuming that it was corroded in place.

Well, when it finally came off the piece the nut goes through was separate
meaning that removing it was not even necessary, that hammering and
chiseling it was pointless, and that the wheel cylinder was actually held
onto the backing plate by two screws from the back that are not visible or
accessible without pulling the axle out of the diff. The wheel cylinder
came off when these attaching screws broke the ears off the wheel cylinder.

Now my question is why the heck is this not mentioned in the factory repair
manual, the supplement, or the tech guide?! I'm assuming I must have
missed something but after looking over those materials a second time I
still see no mention of these bolts or the need to pull the axles out to
gain access to the rear of the backing plate to remove the secret screws!

I have another 62 sitting right next to this one and checked, it has the
wheel cylinder attached the same way so I assume this is correct and
original.

Thanks,
