I'm with JR on this. As wonderful as new cars may be, their value is about at the lowest in the 10-15 year range and any number of expensive repairs needed to keep a car going at that age may cost more than the car is worth. Cars often get junked for that reason rather than because their drive train expired or they are rusted out beyond repair. It is mainly love that keeps people repairing cars at this stage in their lives and it's why so few cars make it to antique-hood.

My daily driver is a 20 year old Saturn SW2 with 131,000 mostly hard Boston city miles on it. It's been very reliable, though has needed a couple of repairs in the past few years that would have caused many people to junk the car if they didn't keep the car alive for love and/or have the know-how to make the repairs themselves, thus saving a lot of money.

How many of our Corvairs would still be around today if a dedicated core of enthusiasts weren't around in the 1970s and 80s to keep alive cars that were worth next to nothing?

On another note, why is it so many Corvair people -- people who love and value these cars like nobody else does -- seem to show so little respect for our cars? $29000 isn't all that much for a desirable antique car. If the car were a vintage Camaro SS convertible in similar shape, you can bet your sweet behind it would be selling for at least three times that number.

A new car at $29,000 would (likely) become a throw away in about 10 to 15
years. The Corvair - less likely to happen any time soon.
