First thing to check is the belt on too tight?  Second, is it a properly sized belt?  The wrapped ones you can get today fit nicely into the grooves.  Finally, is anything bent or badly misaligned, check the harmonic balancer as well to be sure it isn't separating.

Unless your friend is road racing, a good stock system will generally stay together.  I just replaced a belt because it was 5 or 6 years old and I thought it might be dry rotted, not because it came off, and my teenaged sons and I drive the car (110/4).
