I don't recall the precise date but I do recall that after the Arab Oil Embargo in the Fall of '73 and subsequent talk of the "energy crisis" we were all conditioned to expect that the price of a gallon of gasoline would inevitably go above $1 a gallon.  What I do recall was being surprised that the price of a Big Mac went over $1 before the price of a gallon of gasoline did.
