If you are rebuilding the engine, the route that Mark and Matt recommended
are fine.

How about if you just want to clean the stuff and keep the engine together?

GM TOP END CLEANER---Available in spray cans from the General.

Remove spark Plugs and blast some down each hole. Let it sit 24 hours.

Then with the Air Cleaner Ass'y removed, Fire up the car----Going to smoke
more than a little.

Then , while goosing the throttle by the linkage, spray half to 3/4 of a can
down each carb throat---Car will smoke like a Freight Train through the
exhaust.

When it's done smoking, it will begin to purr. Best thing to do to clean
out the carbon---could also use it BEFORE dismantling engine if engine in
running order before rebuild.

Then find someone who has already broken the law by buying some 110LL AvGas
and let 5 gallons or so find its own way into your tank purely by accident
for break-in runs.

Cures all ills.

Hank

Mike, I've used the wire wheel on my bench grinder for the valves but
since the heads are aluminum I took mine to a guy with a bead blaster
and let him spray them clean. He also got most of the crud out of the
exhaust ports.

What is a good method of removing soft carbon from the heads and valves. It
is
not thick, but I'd like to get most of it off before reassembling the heads.
I
only plan to do a quick lapping of the valves.
