I like "driver aids" that can be removed when not wanted. I actually used
the ABS last night, (my bad!) I was following a little too close and, 10
cars ahead, someone had to stop to make a decision (grrrgh). I never got
closer than 6 feet to that bumper ahead, but that really seems close when
the brake pedal is on the floor and the tires are chirping their way to a
stop.

Smitty Says; A couple of months ago I was the tail ender in a chain
reaction accident. I was driving my wife's 11 equinox. If I had been
driving any of my Early Corvairs I would have stopped with a great squalling
and smoking of tires. But No. The ABS was happily breaking enough to allow
me to steer (if I had room). It was still chonking along allowing me to
roll as I plowed into the back of another car to the tune of around 3
thousand bucks. There is no shut off for the driver assists on the car or I
would have had that off. I have stopped short of many accidents in my
driving career, sometimes getting off the brakes in time to steer around,
sometimes pulsing the pedal, and sometimes just grinding off the tires. I
was so furious after the collision I could have killed a GM engineer and a
couple of safety Nazis.
